Abigail, a 23-year-old from a town in Indiana, leads a vibrant life working at a preschool, teaching Creative Music and Movement, and engaging in an after-school and summer program. She is also a part-time student at IUPUI, majoring in Music Therapy.

However, Abigail’s life wasn’t always so full of promise and purpose. In November 2020, she found herself in a very different place. Struggling with severe depression and feeling like a mere shell of herself, Abigail reached out for help at Selah House, an eating disorder treatment center. Her stay extended from November 2020 to the beginning of January 2021, marking a pivotal period in her life.

Before Abigail entered treatment at Selah House, her life was devoid of hope and determination. The vibrant young woman who loved music and teaching was buried under the weight of her depression. She was simply going through the motions of life without any real sense of purpose or joy. Abigail recalls, “Before treatment, I had no hope and determination. I was severely depressed and just a shell of myself.” Trust was a significant issue; Abigail felt isolated, not knowing who she could turn to for support. This pervasive sense of loneliness and despair was what she carried with her into Selah House.

Transformation During Treatment

The initial phase of Abigail’s treatment at Selah House was marked by anxiety and uncertainty. The unfamiliar environment and her mistrust made her hesitant. “During treatment, I still felt that way and nervous, didn’t know who I could trust,” she remembers. However, as days turned into weeks, a slow but steady transformation began. Abigail started to connect with others who were battling similar struggles. These connections were a lifeline, showing her that she was not alone in her journey. The support from fellow clients and the compassionate staff at Selah House played a crucial role in her progress.

Abigail’s favorite memories from Selah House include the simple yet profound joys of making friends and engaging in communal activities. “My favorite Selah memories were meeting people that were going through similar struggles and knowing that I’m not alone in this journey. Making friends with the clients and staff.” Playing card games and participating in art therapy were therapeutic and enjoyable. Particularly, she cherished working on her therapy book and learning to crochet, a hobby she continues to enjoy. These activities were more than just pastimes; they were instrumental in her healing process, providing her with a sense of accomplishment and a creative outlet.

Life After Selah House

Upon completing her treatment, Abigail emerged with a renewed sense of hope and gratitude. Selah House had given her back not just her life, but a life filled with purpose and joy. “After Selah, I feel hopeful and thankful to Selah for giving me my life back. I’m able to enjoy life and am not just going through the motions of life,” she reflects. The depression that once consumed her was replaced with a resilient spirit determined to embrace every aspect of life. Abigail found joy in her work and studies, and her relationships flourished with the new understanding and skills she had gained.

Recovery also brought with it a robust support system. Abigail now had a network of people she could turn to in times of struggle. “Recovery has given me a support system of people that I can turn to when I’m struggling. It has given me motivation to continue in my recovery.” This support system, coupled with the resources and coping mechanisms she learned at Selah House, fortified her resolve to continue her journey of recovery. She felt empowered, equipped with the tools necessary to face challenges head-on.

Gratitude and Moving Forward

Reflecting on her time at Selah House, Abigail is profoundly grateful. The center didn’t just treat her eating disorder; it transformed her outlook on life. The staff and the community she found there were instrumental in her recovery. They provided not just medical and therapeutic support, but also emotional and social connections that were vital for her healing.

“I would not be where I am today if it were not for Selah House,” Abigail acknowledges. Her journey from despair to hope is a testament to the profound impact that a compassionate, comprehensive treatment center like Selah House can have. Today, she looks forward to continuing her studies in Music Therapy, driven by the motivation and hope she rediscovered during her time at Selah House.
